Mersea Island Allotment and Leisure Gardeners Association

LOCATION

The Mersea Allotments are on East Road, West Mersea.

 PLOT SIZES AND PRICES

We have 80 plots on a 4.5 acre fully fenced field.

Full plots measure 24 x 10 metres and cost £100 a year.  

Half plots measure 12 x 10 metres and cost £55 a year.

Quarter plots measure 6 x 10 metres and cost £30 a year.

RENT AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Rents are due to WMTC on 1^st January each year.  This includes rent for the plot, water, car parking and mowing of the common parts by the Council.  Pathways between the plots must be maintained by the plot holders.  Click here for a map of the site.

Although the allotment field is rented from the Council its administration is the responsibility of MIALGA.  Therefore to rent a plot or work on one, all involved are required to be members of MIALGA.  This costs £5 a year, due in October, and includes membership of the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners (NSALG) to which MIALGA is affiliated.  This membership also includes third party liability insurance.

MANAGEMENT

Day to day management of MIALGA is through the MIALGA Committee which meets every quarter.  The Committee consists of the following:

DEVELOPMENT

It is still early days and the whole site is gradually being set up.  Future plans include a communal shed, landscaping the common parts, provision of manure and mulch bays, relocation of entrance gates and improving the roadways.

WAITING LIST AND HOW TO GET A PLOT

If you would like a plot you are advised to get your name on the waiting list as soon as you can.  Currently (June 2010) we have 18 Mersea Residents and 3 Caravaners on the list.  Priorities are:  1. Mersea Residents,   2. Those from caravans on the Island,  3. Others from off the Island.  Although it is difficult to be accurate, the list is currently moving at about 15 places a year.
