The acidity or alkalinity of our soil (it’s pH) is important as this will effect it’s overall fertility. It can be measured using a simple testing kit that you can buy in any garden centre. Most of the fruit and vegetables that we want to grow prefer a neutral soil, although brassicas prefer slightly alkaline conditions whilst potatoes and strawberries like a soil that is slightly acid. MIALGA Secure Allotment Land for Mersea

Dear Members, At last we are an Allotment Association with Allotments! Or at least land for allotments. Mike Edwards, Chairman, signed the contract on Thursday 8th October 2009 on behalf of the Association. The contract between the Landlord and West Mersea Town Council was also signed on the same day. The land, as you most probably know, belongs to John and Mary Crisp, and is the field on the left on East Road before turning the corner at the entrance to Waldegraves. Draft Allotment Plot Layout

Planning is underway in readiness for the new allotment site, and a draft layout has been produced in order to determine how best to utilise the available land. The committee visited the site on Saturday 10th October and marked out the proposed design to ensure that site access, paths and car parking etc meet requirements. More work on the final layout is still required, and a working party will again be on site Saturday 17th October to cut the bramble and nettle overgrowth back from the potential car parking area. The West Mersea Town Council has reached a heads of agreement with a local landowner who is keen to see the provision of allotments on Mersea Island. The proposed site is located on East Road between the Fox Inn and Chapmans Lane on the North side of the road. The land is level and enjoys an open sunny position with good drainage, and although the site has been left as a hay meadow for the past 15 years it should be ideal for allotments.
